Three New Songs At Anime Remix!

Anime Remix welcomes its 60th remix today, an orchestral rendition of
Rei’s theme from Neon Genesis Evangelion by Jeremy Robson, known best
for his work on the Final Fantasy VII Philharmonic Suites.

Rei IV also marks the first Evangelion remix on Anime Remix.

In the past few days we have also seen new songs from both new and returning mixers.

Newcomer mDuo‘s collaboration with the singular SeattleOvercoat marks
the first Hellsing remix on Anime Remix: Secret Salsa Serenade, an interesting take on a rather Gothic original.

DigiE returns to AR with yet another Appleseed remix, entitled Bringing Home the Appleseed. All songs come highly recommended!

Chrono Symphonic given tentative release date

Claado Shou, project leader of the Chrono Trigger remix project, Chrono Symphonic, stated on Thursday that he plans to release the project on September 27, 2005. The date will be the 10-year anniversary of Chrono Trigger‘s release in North America. While the date is not yet official, Claado Shou instructed all remixers involved to complete their work as if it were.

If you’re planning on doing a song, please have it ready to go entirely at least a few weeks prior to September 27 so it can be released accordingly,” Claado Shou said.

Old Games & Abandonware

If you’re anything like me, you love the old PC
games. You know, the old Sierra and Lucas Arts adventure games,
or those excellent platformers by Apogee. Well, if you love all
these old gems, and want to get your game on, here’s a few Abandonware
sites I strongly suggest taking a look at.

http://www.the-underdogs.org — Huge game and review archive.

http://www.abandonia.com — A good collection of abandonware games.

http://www.reloaded.org — Sister-site of Abandonia, fairly new.

Also, be sure to check out these freeware roguelike gems.

New (& old) zyko at VGmix, plus EonBlue

So I was checking out the VGMix RSS feed, when I had saw that zyko had released a song call ‘marblez in your mouf.’
Well a name like that does tend to spark some interest, and I’m a
pretty big zyko fan as it is, so I decided to head over there and check
it out.

Turns out ‘marblez in your mouf’ is an arrangement of Marble Garden Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog and is a follow up to zyko’s Green Hill arrangement, ‘The Green Hills of East Bay’, from back in April.

As with most zyko songs, it’s not exactly easy to explain. It a pretty
smoothed out, roughed up, chilled, tossed, and saut?d, all in 1
package. However, no matter what you call it, it’s awesome. Granted it
might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you like the original, or
are familiar with/enjoy zyko’s other tracks, then you should be able to
appreciate this one.

While there I also decided to pick up another zyko track that was
actually a lot older (October 30th, 2004), but I had never seen before.
The song is called ‘Of Futility and Hope’ and is an arrangement of the ever-so-popular Tristram music from Diablo & Diablo 2. As this song is pretty effing old, I won’t go on to really talk about it beyond saying it’s about 13 minutes of rock solid win.

Another thing I noticed on the RSS feed was that yesterday EonBlue had released his OverClocked ReMix Idol round 1 submission, ‘Mild Psychosis’,
to VGMix. It’s a remix of Shademan’s music from Megaman 7 (which I
haven’t played because I’m not a huge fan of Megaman games) and it was
DEFINITELY one of my favorite tracks in the first round. If you haven’t
heard it yet, it’s worth listening to, even if you’ve never heard the
source music like I hadn’t until the actual competition.

GB emulator on PSP

Thats right, the first emulator for the PSP has just been released. Developed by Mr. MIRAKICHI, it runs GB emulation pretty smoothly with no sound. The story was first broke on the 2ch forums and then posted in the ps2dev.org forums. A picture can be seen here.

Naruto fan culture proves P2P can create fans, customers

Joi Ito blogs about an exchange he had with his sister regarding an
anime fan-scene in Japan. The activity resulting from “illicit” Naruto
derivations created by fans amounts to a convincing case study for the
notion that filesharing can generate new fans and consumers.
Source removed for possible legal issues.

[The Source] wrote:

If you go to the site that lists the BitTorrent files of Naruto, you
will see that fans have subtitled the episodes into a variety of
languages like Hebrew, Portuguese, French… When new episodes of
Naruto come out, the fans get together on IRC and other fora and
collaborate and create subtitled versions and put them online. If you
search for Naruto on Amazon.com, you find a page where the fans are
voting for the DVD release and the notice says that they will notify
the publisher of the voting. (It would be interesting to find out if
the publisher or the fans initiated this.) It also appears that when a
local DVD is released, the fans take down their subtitled episodes for
that region. By allowing the fans to create demand, the publishers are
using these file sharing networks and illegal derivative works as an
extremely efficient form of marketing. Thanks to the network of
Internet anime fans, Naruto is still niche, but popular globally.

This kind of publisher approved “piracy” is not a new thing.
Dojinshi, are comics created by fans of Japanese comics. They are
illegal derivative works. They make their own stories using famous
comics as the base. They have huge conventions and it’s an amazing
community. The publishers of most of these comics encouraged this
dojinshi culture because they realized that this increases the demand
for the originals. These derivative works and sharing creates “fans”
not “lost customers”.

Microsoft Xbox 360 Specifications Leak

Via NeoWin.net:

Days before Microsoft
is due to air a special event on MTV across the world, specifications
for the next generation Xbox have been posted in full online. Amongst
the details leaked is word of two Xbox live services, a silver free
service and a gold paid service.

“There will be two versions of Xbox Live. Silver is free (everyone
gets it), and Gold is a paid subscription, like the current XBL. It
looks like Xbox Live will be free on the weekends for everyone; Gold
members will get it all the time, obviously. Current Xbox Live accounts
will carry over to the 360 and become Gold Xbox Live accounts. Both
Gold and Silver members will be able to download demos, trailers, and
other content through XBL.”

The XBox 360 CPU is said to have 3 symmetrical cores running at 3.2 GHz
a piece, 1MB of L2 Cache and single VMX-128 vector unit per core. The
ATI graphics processor will run at 500MHz and contain 48 parallel
floating-point shader pipelines. System memory is expected to be
comprised of 512MB GDDR3 RAM and have a FSP capable of shunting data
around at 21.6GB/s.

Microsoft is also rumoured to support DVD-Video, DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW,
CD-DA, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, WMA CD, MP3 CD, and JPEG Photo CD in the
new XBox 360 optical drive. Clearly a big step forwards from the
original Xbox.
