The Corner Store

And welcome once again to the Corner Store. I’m going to have to come up with some good material if I want this to last (honestly I’m still shocked that VGDJ is one episode away from the big 60). This week I’ll talk about some guidelines when looking for an artist to hire on commission.
As far as the second part of that statement goes the best
advice I can give is look within your pricing range. There’s plenty of
good artists out there who’ll work for you and not charge you through
the nose. The main reason for this is because they have jobs and they
are only doing commission work for fun, or to bring in some extra cash.

Depending
on who you are you might like to find someone who can accept payments
through an EFT service like Paypal. But first things first: no matter
who you choose, get into contact with him/her and make sure that
commissions are even open. It would be very time-consuming to send an
awesome idea just to find out that all the slots are full for that
month, or that the artist doesn’t want or need to accept any more.

Browse
the market. Don’t be afraid to contact several artists at once; it’s
important to view several different styles and see which one better
fits what you’d like to have done. Also, artist community sites are a
good place to start looking as, at least according to my experience,
artists will link to others of similar skill or interest in their
profiles, which I think serves a dual purpose in that A) they’re
helping their friends get pageviews and B) they are spreading the work
load, effectively generating revenue for their compatriots and not
hogging the loot all for themselves.

Regardless of who you
choose most artists are perfectly willing to give you a preview sketch
before any money changes hands or work begins; this is so that the
customer (you) can change things if needed and also to guarantee that
the artist is on the same page as you.

Of course a good customer
also needs to be patient: some artists will start on your idea as soon
as payment is received but even so it still takes time so be prepared
to wait several weeks, though it’s perfectly acceptable (though
politeness is highly encouraged) to ask for a progress update if the
wait time exceeds one month.

This is about all I have to say
about the subject of artists and commissions, but likely you can find
someone just by browsing forums. No matter what you do, remember this
one last thing: respect the artist, praise them, it makes them happy
and willing to accept you as a repeat customer.

The Corner Store

Hello and welcome to the first installment of my (hopefully) weekly
column! I’ve got some things for you to look at, in and around various
parts of the online and offline community.
First, Halo Related news as follows:

CoG.cc’s
dedicated servers continue to draw idiots who think that it’s funny to
shoot teammates regardless of whether friendly fire is off or not; in
addition to that users also continue to perpetuate the myth that an
insulting name is funny on a general audiences server.
In related
news Highspeedhalo.net has some new runs to look at; if you’re having
trouble beating Halo 2 (you noob) then this is not for you as some of
these players have spent literal days trying to get a good enough speed
run to submit. Be sure to check out news pages two and three as well
for some no-shot goodness.

Non-Halo news as follows:

Machinae
Supremacy is still quite a good band, and news floats around that
there’s a new Mars Volta album out so if you’re interested in them give
it a look. Television continues to disappoint some people, the Adult
Swim lineup especially. But for those of us who haven’t already seen
fansubs or shelled out thirty dollars per disc Bleach and Trinity blood
are welcome additions to the Saturday Lineup, as well as new Robot
Chicken for sunday, and most recently a surprisingly on-topic (at least
for a moment) new episode of Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law.

But
if those don’t satisfy you you’re always welcome to tune into local
programming and infomercials, History Channel for some laughs at the
secular scholars’ attempts to interpret how the pyramids were built and
Discovery Science keeping you up to date on the little things that make
the world tick.

That’s all for this week; join me next time as I
take a look at the goings-on of the artist side of the universe. I’ll
have artist reviews, commission guides and who’s been where, so don’t
miss it.

To all SD3/SoM2 Project Members! Huge update!

The Seiken Densetsu 3 project, after recent hacker attacks at its last forums, now has new and beautiful looking forums!
All members are to register immediately if you can. WIPs can be
posted, rated and criticized. Please wait at least a couple days for
Usa or TheDeath to verify you as a member of this project (private
forum sight).

Otherwise to say, this is a huge step for the
project. From my point of view (note: biased), this advances the
project by many steps because of the new way to communicate. Usa and
TheDeath thanks ThaSauce for being an awesome host and website.

Help Shael Open for Optimus Rhyme & MC Frontalot!

From his thread on OCR:

I just got word from the agent who booked the
October 21st MC F and Optimus Rhyme show at Crash Mansion that, if I
can draw 40 or more people to my show next Thursday, September 21st, at
Fat Baby in New York City, she could give me a shot at opening for the
aformentioned rappers at the aformentioned October 21st performance.

This would be my first weekend show and a signifigant step up in terms
of venue size from the two I will have played previously (Club Midway;
Fat Baby).

SO, if you live in or can travel to New York and know or are 40 people,
PLEASE OH PLEASE come see me next Thursday at Fat Baby, and tell them
you’re there to see me at the door, or they might think you’re there to
see some band with real drums, some band like The Sexy Champions, who
I’m playing before.

In conclusion, get your ass to here:

News and Updates

First of all, I would like to offer our condolences to the Irwin
family. We can only hope that the legacy of Steve Irwin will live
on with the various animals he has tried to save from extinction.

Secondly, it was brought to my attention recently that djpretzel has
changed the layout of OverClocked ReMix once again, settling in on a
sleek tab design which was created to make the website a little easier
to navigate.

Lastly, the Dwelling of Duels has announced winners and the next
competition. Congratulations to Master Hatchet, goat, and
Darangen.

This month’s Dwelling of Duels is the music of Silent Hill.
Arrange and play music from any of the 4 SH games and enter!
Concurrently, the third annual Tornado of Solos is happening this
month, featuring the Follin Brothers’ Silver Surfer, Track 01.
For the uninitiated, the Tornado of Solos is a shred competition in
which extremely technically advanced players show off their virtuosity
and arrangement capabilities with the same song as everyone else.

Thanks go to virt for supporting the DoD.

album6 – It’s coming

After the unparalled success of album5, I’m heading up a new project: album6. Unlike album5, album6 will be a collaborative album, with each artist submitting one track. All that’s required is a registered version of FL Studio and 3xOsc presets. The hour-long event will take place from 8-9pm EDT (Midnight-1am GMT) in #album6 on irc.enterthegame.com. Be there, or else you won’t be there.

WE GO MOTHER F***IN SNAKES!!!

I can’t help but notice you’re home and not out buying tickets for Snakes on a Plane….WHAT THE HELL IS YOUR PROBLEM?!
Snakes on a Plane comes out TONIGHT. You’d best get down there and get tickets before they sell out! Unless you already…in which case congrats! And enjoy the best movie ever made, and that ever WILL be made…

…that is of course until Samuel L. makes “MO MOTHERF***IN’ SNAKES, ON MO MOTHERF***IN’ PLANES!”

Zelda: OOT Project now recruiting!

…and no, it’s not OLRina of Time 😀

This particular project is the brainchild of Nario, Link12584, and Jewbei, and so far there has been a VGMix thread informing us that they are now recruiting.
In this thread there are also some good points made about the scene in general
[depending on who you agree with, I guess]. As of this news post, the
artists who have signed on include myself, DistantJ, Strike911, DJ
Siamey, and a few others that I don’t know very well yet.

I’m encouraging that you get in contact with Nario, Link12584 or Jewbei and sign up for a track! I think this’ll be a great learning experience for everyone involved.

Mini Sonic Season 7

The Coop writes:

Been a while, hasn’t it? Well, despite a few setbacks here and there, I finally got around to making a new season. Took a bit longer than I thought it would, but it’s ready to go. As usual, I’ll post a new one every two or three days until the season’s run is done. So, after a longer than normal break…”
