Flikomp #2 – 8PM Central tonight!!

I have a busy night of breaking things, but lets see if we can fit in some musical fun too!

Compo Date / Time: October 9th, 8:00 PM Central

This is a music compo that has no direction other than to give people
the motivation to just MAKE something (something I have a problem with
all the time). Instead of there being a theme of any sort that may
cause someone to turn away because they don’t feel they can make
something in a certain style, they can just make whatever they want. I
encourage original music in this.

An Hour and Flikteen minutes (or Flikomp) will last just that. You’ll
have an hour to put something together, and perhaps 15 minutes or so to
do any quick cleanup and effect work and such that you couldn’t do in
the hour of creation time.

We will meet in #flikomp on the EnterTheGame IRC server.
Don’t worry. This isn’t some competition or anything. This is purely a
way to motivate people who have difficulty coming up with music to
make. Anyone can join in.

You may use whatever tools you normally use to make your music, just as
long as you can make an MP3 out of it in the end so everyone can
listen. When you make your MP3, it can be e-mailed to [email protected],
or uploaded to a server of your choice and the link sent to me. Name
your file “yournickname – yoursongname.mp3” so we can keep these
organized. Once received I will put everything into a RAR file and
upload it to my server for all to download. If you have dialup this
could be a problem, but we’ll do what we can. There will be a half hour
break from when I get the RAR file uploaded so everyone can download
it, and yes I will try and make individual files available in a public
directory if possible.

I’ll try my best to make this a weekly thing. There may not be a
specific date set for it. Odds are I’ll just make a new thread for it
or something and let people know what time I’ll be starting it that
night. Weekends are iffy since I’m out of town so much during them. If
you miss out on one, don’t worry, there will be more! And don’t fret if
you think your original tune sucks.

This compo is so you can make stuff and in turn get better!

Hope to see you there, and happy music making!

New Powerglove song availible for stream on MySpace for 48 hours only!

Powerglove has put a new song on their MySpace music player from their upcoming album “Metal Kombat for the Mortal Man”, but only for 48 hours.

GO LISTEN TO IT, IT’S <3 From MySpace:

By order of the Metatron (Alan Rickman), the first
track from Metal Kombat for the Mortal Man, entitled “So Sexy
Robotnik,” has been posted.

Sonic 2 is the game of choice.

But there is only enough power to sustain speed metal and saxophone soloing for 48 hours, so now is the time for ACTION!!!!
Do not live a life of regrets! What will you tell your
grandchildren? That you let opportunity slip through your bony fingers,
or that you went to our myspace page and listened??? No one can choose
for you.

Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?

Thus, logically, you must listen to our new song.

ALS4: On

From VGMix:

“Many of you know of it, and some of you have participated in it, and the latest incarnation is set to start in one day: Auld Lang Sine is the music “contest” I run, which has been on hiatus for a while but will be starting on September 1st. The concept isn’t so much a competition as it is to see who can write and produce an album within the allotted time.”
We’re starting a bit earlier than usual this year, simply because I’m anxious to get started, but there’s also one major change: I will be able to host all entries this time! My webhost has graciously expanded their plans to the extent that I don’t need to worry about webspace or bandwidth for quite a long time, so I’m now able to run the entire contest from my own site. 🙂

Visit http://als.ubikmusic.org for forthcoming details and the contest itself!

Additionally, Ubik requested that all former participants provide updated links to their works from previous ALSes, since he’ll also be re-hosting these as well.

Free Shit: Evoke Tracks, Sakari Infinity Redesign, SGX, Creepy Simon

It’s Sunday night, let’s get some LINKS! The last week has unfortunately been kind of… weak, but there’s still a bit of material to share.
This weekend, a demoparty in Germany, Evoke happened. A bunch of my Renoiser friends went [read here] and had a blast. I’ll have to wait for MAGFest for something like this, but there were plenty of compos with plenty of great stuff. In the thread on the Renoise board, there’s links popping up to songs made by the crew that attended.

dblue – tehvoke!
Yes, that dblue. I don’t hear Glitch used anywhere though. A pretty cool SID-like dance tune, with good energy, deep bass, and sexy lead. Also a speak n spell. Reminds me of Machinae Supremacy without the metal :3

keith303 – myanmar
This is an AWESOME drum n bass track. “the vocals originate from a three second indian chanting snipped which is totally copyrightless and got alienated to the max. wink.gif as the party crowd didn’t seem to enjoy this very much, maybe you or somebody else can.” I dunno why the hell the party crowd wouldn’t enjoy this, I certainly am. This is the kind of sound you’d expect from a pro – awesome synths, sounds, and good mixing.

That’s all for the Evoke music for now. I might have more music from this event in next week’s post.

Sakari Infinity, an original game music site, has a new design, and with the exception of the HUEG header it looks pretty good. Click around and you’ll find some neat tracks for use in videogames.

SGX – Have No Tyrant, which I linked to last week, was uploaded to Reunion Studio. SGX and Reunion seem to be getting along very well together. This is his third single on Reunion so far.

In other news, Simon reads my column, and so should you and all your friends. I wonder what I’ll find if I follow referral links like him…

Whats Pink And Sucks?: xoc performs the music from Kirbys Adventure

xoc, the creative force behind the SMW album and the recently released xoc and Heavy Friends Book II: Touch of Max Nerds, has just released a new video game music cover album. This time, Jason pays tribute to the soundtrack of Kirby’s Adventure for the NES. Check out What’s Pink And Sucks?: xoc performs the music from Kirby’s Adventure at xoc’s web site, or download it from archive.org.

Peter Gabriel, We7, and ad supported music.

Star Wars text crawl please:

We7 is set to begin combatting internet music and video piracy in June with an innovative PAT.PENDING media graft Web 2.0 technologies and the promise of DRM free trakcs. The problem is that no major labels have signed on yet, but with heavy hitter PETER GABRIEL as a founding investor it should be only a matter of time before more popular artists sign on. The service is not limited to big name artists, either, as Gabriel was quoted saying “We7 provides artists—even across the more experimental or minority
genres—with the opportunity to build a new source of income from their
music.” A similar service, SPIRALFROG offers DRM encumbered tracks at the price of one or more video advertisements prior to download, and already has two major labels sign up, EMI MUSIC PUBLISHING and UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP.
