VGDJ: One Year Anniversary and Philadelphia Meet

VGDJ’s 1st anniversary will take place on May 22nd, 2006. In order to properly celebrate the occassion, hosts zircon and pixietricks will be holding a meet-up in Philadelphia, PA on Saturday, May 20th. The plan is to meet up at the Philadelphia City Hall around 12PM and as zircon says, “and then merriment will commence when we’re all there.” There are also plans to record a “live” VGDJ show as well.

Further information (as well as tentative “sign up”) is available here.

USA Network to show Pro-VG program

Major League Gaming and the television network USA
have inked a deal allowing USA to air 7 one hour episodes this fall,
featuring MLG’s professional circuit and its players, as well as
play-by-play commentary that one would normally associate with live
sports.
“This is the sign that pro
gaming has finally arrived to the mass market,” said Matthew Bromberg,
MLG’s president and chief operating officer. “It’s like Texas holdem poker was two
years ago, or NASCAR 15 years ago.” Convenience is one of the most obvious advantages of playing poker online.

This is the first time professional online gaming is getting a spotlight
on a medium which will be broadcast into the homes of millions, instead
of simply being available through the internet. While there have
been a few spotlights on games like UFABET สล็อตออนไลน์ยอดนิยมของไทย on various newscasts/children’s
networks, there wasn’t much of an acceptance for gaming as anything
more than sheer entertainment.

While I’m skeptical, especially as this seems to be a ploy to lure in
more corporate sponsership, this could be a good thing for
gaming. It may show the mass of American people that gaming is
more than just entertainment, that it is a viable career option in some
circles, as the X-Games did for pro-BMXing and skateboarding before.

PLAY!: Koji Kondo to Attend & Music from Blue Dragon Featured

From http://www.play-symphony.com:

JMP Productions announced today that Nintendo’s famous video game
composer Koji Kondo is going to attend the world-premiere of PLAY! A
Video Game Symphony on May 27, 2006, in Chicago at the Rosemont
Theatre. His attendance includes some exciting surprises for his fans
to be revealed at a later time. Nobuo Uematsu’s music from Blue Dragon will be performed exclusively for the
first time at PLAY!’s premiere in Chicago on Saturday, May 27, 2006. The
video game is designed by Final Fantasy series originator Hironobu Sakaguchi.
The presentation of Blue Dragon at the concert will include never seen before
visuals from the highly-anticipated Xbox 360 title. PLAY! A Video Game Symphony
is a symphony concert world-tour featuring music from a catalogue of blockbuster
video game titles.

Koji Kondo is one of the most highly-acclaimed video game music
composers in the world. His songs are certainly memorable; the SUPER
MARIO BROS. theme song is still a mainstream icon 20 years after it was
written and about as recognized as a 1980’s pop song. Kondo’s music has
been cited as being as integral to the Nintendo style as the game
design of Shigeru Miyamoto.

Blue Dragon is an RPG developed by veterans of the video game industry, bringing
together Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi with Dragon Ball creator Akira
Toriyama providing character designs, and Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu
contributing the soundtrack.

Says Jason Michael Paul: “We are pulling
out all the stops for this once in a lifetime event at the PLAY! premiere. Come
be a part of what promises to be a show of many firsts in the US and worldwide
for that matter. I am just truly grateful to have the opportunity to give a
sneak peek to one of the most anticipated video games that the world has ever
seen. The inclusion of Blue Dragon into the program only further legitimizes
this concert as being the marquee event of the year.”.

All tickets for
the world-premiere of PLAY! including the VIP meet and greet are available at
the box office, Ticketmaster locations, on the
internet at www.ticketmaster.com/artist/1009980.
Video game composers
Nobuo Uematsu, Yasunori Mitsuda, Koji Kondo, Jeremy Soule, Akira Yamaoka, Yuzo
Koshiro, Jason Hayes and Marty O’Donnell will attend the VIP meet and greet in
Chicago.

VGDJ: Episode #037

This week on the show all about the music and community of OverClocked ReMix:

“Out with the old, in with the new! It’s springtime, and OCR and VGDJ alike are busting out some fresh site designs. (Except we spared you the sidebar… this time…) A thousand thanks to Cyan_Ide for his amazing work! SgtRama’s back like Jack, we’ve got Chrono plus crazy rap, and I suck at free-styling, but put on your…cap? Don’t worry, you’ll get it when you hear this week’s jollly good show. Score one for pixietricks!”

Virt blows minds, ears; posts mp3s

On March 31st, Jake Kaufman (better known as virt), had a successful live chip show in New York City. He was preceeded by One Bit Music and Bit Shifter. One Bit Music played the drums live during his set, and then Bit Shifter literally blew the speakers, leaving Jake without tweeters.
As a bonus, Jake is offering the majority of the songs he played for download from his personal website, http://virt.vgmix.com. I highly recommend the “Thriller cover. Cheers.

CompoST 55

CompoST 55 was held today. The theme was “Haunted House.” The entries are located at http://compost.lggaming.com/compost55/. Participating today was me, Tyler Heath, Catlein, Garian, and Fusion2004. Ty won, obviously :). GHETTOSTS!
CompoSTs [short for Compo and SoundTempest put together :)] are thematic videogame music OHCs, held in #soundtempest on EsperNet. They are scheduled whenever anyone feels like compoing.

Formats allowed are music modules [it,s3m,xm,mod], NSF, mp3, and ogg.

I host the CompoSTs personally and also participate. I pick the theme and regulate the start and end time. I also decide whether the channel votes on a winner or not [sometimes when I am tired, there is no voting :)]

Come hang out in #soundtempest, and please let me know if/when you would like to have one.

People’s ReMix Competition: Anime XI starts!

PRC:A just started again.

“It’s time for a new PRC:A! Due to popular demand, we’re expanding PRC:A from a weekly competition to a monthly, with 3 weeks to mix and 1 week to vote. Therefore, entries to PRCA11 will be due by 11:59pm Pacific time, April 30th, 2006. Voting will happen during the first week of May.

“The winners from last week were GrayLightning and Dhsu, who have decided that their choice for this week is the theme song to the classic American cartoon Ducktales. You can get the song either of the following two links:

http://www.mattfacer.com/sounds.php
http://mduo13.no-ip.org/misc/ducktales.mp3

“A note, unlike the other PRCs, the PRC:A allows the previous week’s winners to enter and compete. (The only rule is that if you win 3 weeks in a row then you’re disqualified from the next round, and you don’t get to pick the song that time, either.)

“Good luck mixing, and I hope we get a good response here.”

Kwakfest held 4/8/06

A Kwakfest was held on April 8th. I participated, along with 11 others. The .zip isn’t very large so here’s a link:
http://kwakfest.vgmix.com/kwakfest_2006-04-08.zip

Kwakfests, or Kwaks for short, are MIDI OHCs [one hour compos] which means: a one hour competition where you must write anything in midi format. A theme is given, though it is only a suggestion. The songs are mostly humorous, and GM is usually hilarious no matter what you try to make with it. Kwakfests are always great fun and I encourage MIDI-capable ThaSauce readers to pay attention to the General Discussion forum on VGMix, where someone [usually tumult] announces a Kwakfest in advance, and join up whenever we have one.

In the future, I will make ThaSauce news whenever a CompoST, Kwakfest, or Shelob takes place. More info on CompoSTs and Shelobs when those happen 🙂
