Freshly Baked ReMixer Challenge 2008

[Originally posted on OCReMix]
Way back in 2002 a forum user, who’s name escape me
today (sorry if you’re still out there D:) ran a 1-shot competition
called the Freshly Baked ReMixer challenge. In the thread artist signed
up and were assigned challenges posted by other forum users. This is
how artists like myself, Suzumebachi, and GLL all got out starts. There
were also some other impressive tracks by Disco Dan and a few others.
Some time later the same user did the Second Annual FBRC which, while
not as popular as the first one, still saw some solid success.

Since the competition has long been forgotten by most, and seeing all
the talent that’s on OCReMix today, I think it’s time we try a revival.

The Premise:

As stated above the idea of the competition is for forum
users to challenge remixers to remixes of songs/games they request. The
remixer than has a predetermined amount of time to produce a remix of
said material.

The Plan:
Previously everyone just winged it, and sometimes it
worked, sometimes it didn’t. I’ve been tossing around in my head a new
system that should make the situation better for everyone…

Mixers:
Phase 1 will be mixer sign-up. It will last until next
Saturday, and ANYONE wishing to enter may. Be it an established artist
or not. Any and all are welcome, and encouraged to enter.

The Challenges:
Following Phase 1, there will be a 1 week period where
any forum user can submit challenges. Be it from a game, or a specific
song. Challengers MUST include a source tune for reference and ALL CHALLENGERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO NOT PICK SONGS THAT’RE TOO OBSCURE .
This is merely a suggestion as the easier it is for a remixer to get a
midi, or familiarity with a song, the more likely the finished project
will be a quality piece of work. During Phase 2 each user is only
allowed 1 challenge. ReMixers already in the challenge are allowed to
issue challenges themselves.

The Match-Ups:
Once we populate a list of mixers and challenges, a
script be create and will distribute the songs to each mixer. There
will a few days grace period while we sort everything out, and
following that mixers will have 1 month to finish their
challenge. In the event that there are more challenges than mixers
(which is likely) if a mixer successfully finishes their channel
(COMPLETELY a QUALITY remix) then they are free to once again randomly
select another song from the pool. The only stipulation is remixers CAN
NOT be selected to remix a song THEY requested as a challenge.

Winning:
There will be NO voting.
This contest is specifically for remixers to test their abilities as a
mixer, and to give users a chance to get their favorite under-remixed
song finally mixed. Everyone who completes a quality product is a
winner, and every listener wins as well.

Current Status:

  • Phase 1: Wednesday, January 22nd – Saturday, Febuary 2nd, 23:59PM EST
  • Phase 2: Sunday, Febuary 3rd – Saturday, Febuary 9nd, 23:59PM EST
  • Phase 3: TBD

PLEASE NOTE: Mixer sign-ups AND song requests WILL BOTH BE HANDED IN THIS THREAD.

hDot Graphics Competition

I’m holding a little competition to update some of the graphics on my site. You have to be able to make SVG images (try Inkscape) and a little design experience wouldn’t hurt either.

The main prize is 100MB of storage for images, mp3s, etc. (with a 10MB file limit) and possibly some extra smaller prizes if I get good submissions from more than one person. Read the rules and how to enter here.

zircon’s ”Antigravity” Remix Contest

zircon has announced in his newsletter a remix competition involving two tracks from his album Antigravity. We can infer from this that he’s probably got another album coming out late winter/early spring 2008:

“Starting today, you can download remix packs of both “Warhead” and “Mindbender” and create your own remixes of them. You’re welcome to distribute them as you please provided you credit me as the original artist, and there is no money involved; if you plan on selling your remix in some form, please talk to me first and we can work something out.”
“Additionally, I’m starting a friendly contest revolving around these
remix packs. If you complete a remix of either track – in any style you want – send it to [email protected]. I’ll compile all the remixes I get and on Feb 1, 2008, I’ll select two of them to be featured on my next album (and the winners will of course get a cut of the sales, too!) Alternatively, if there are too many good ones to pick from, I’ll open it up to the public to vote on.”

You can download the remix packs here:

You can read more and discuss it with zircon in the OCR Thread.

Flikomp #3

From OCR:

“I’ve got a busy night, so lets try and do an early one. Not sure if many can make it, but we’ll try anyway. So, 5:30 PM Central tonight, #flikomp on the ETG server!”

Conceptual Music Competition 8: Uncharted Waters

CMC: Conceptual Music Competition

The Conceptual Music Competition is back for its eighth round, “Uncharted Waters”.
This competition is based on the rules of the classic TOMC (Thematic Original Music Competition).

The CMC (Conceptual Music Competition) is designed so that each participant enters a piece of music based on a set theme. The participants take the theme and interpret it as they will to come up with something that fits. Any style can work, as long as it portrays a sense of what the theme is.

Feel free to be imaginative!

Each successive theme will be chosen by the winner of the previous competition. For example, say the theme of the last competition, CMC 20, was “Time Travel” and the winner, Naomi, submitted a piece that knocked the socks off of everyone, so she won. Naomi then gets to decide the theme for CMC 21.

This competition is open to registered members of the forums of
OverClocked ReMix, VGMix, Ormgas, VGMusic, SheezyArt, Gaming World, and Young Composers.

CMC 8: Uncharted Waters
“With a sack of clothes and a blank piece of parchment, the hero boards for his voyage through uncharted waters. The paths ahead are many and unexplored. What Towns, Lands, and Adventures lay before him. From sleepy port town, to stormy night, to the vast expanse of sunlit waves stretching to the horizons. What lies beyond, or for that matter, below. An epic exploration of the seas and beyond, deserves an equally epic soundtrack.” -Zekk

Official Rules!:

  1. Each piece must be originally composed for this competition. Arrangements and remixes will not be accepted. (Pieces composed by the participant prior to the competition will not be accepted.)
  2. Each piece must be 2:00 or longer and match the competition theme.
  3. Only one entry per person. Collaborations will be allowed, but each collaborator may not submit any other pieces. (This also means that a person cannot collaborate on two or more different pieces at the same time.)
  4. A link to the entry piece must be PMed or e-mailed to Abadoss prior to the deadline set for each competition. DO NOT POST THE LINK IN THE THREAD!
  5. Important: Each file must be labelled accordingly: Composer_Name_-_Composition_Title_CMC#.mp3
(For example, if Vincent Delano submits a piece called “Running with Scissors” to CMC 16, then his filename would be: Vincent_Delano_-_Running_with_Scissors_CMC16.mp3)
  6. MP3 file format is required. Know that even OGG will need to be converted into MP3. (If someone is unable to do so themselves, Abadoss would be willing and able to do it for them.)
  7. Entries should be accompanied by a description and/or story to help listeners understand what the piece is about. (Not required, though.)
  8. All entries must be submitted by Saturday, May 26, 2007 at 11:59 PM – PST, GMT-8.

You can find the competition threads for each forum listed below:

Good luck and have fun! 😀

Compo: ThaSauce Changelog

On April 27, Analoq launched Compo: ThaSauce. It’s a system for organizing compos, making it easier to submit, enter, and control what happens in a compo. It’s a unique system, and an excellent addition to the growing features here at ThaSauce.

The system is currently in a testing phase, and is being put through a run with ORC 103 on OCR.

In light of this, I have created from information provided by analoq a changelog where I will be documenting changes to Compo: ThaSauce. If you would like to view these changes, you can go here.
